In Togo, one of the poorest nations in the world, international sanctions during most of the last decade made access to basic services like education nearly unattainable for many. Women bear the brunt of the economic hardship and a literacy rate as low as 40% means they have few options to advance.
CARE, with its local partners, is increasing opportunities for girls and women by getting them into school and offering vocational training. The Promotion of Girls Education and Employment Project (PEP) project is designed to enable these young women and girls to break the cycle of poverty through a model that promotes literacy, professional development, and sustainable economic reintegration.
