 | Sierra Leone is one of the poorest countries in the world, ranking last among nearly 180 nations in terms of human development, or quality of life. A decade of civil conflict ravaged the country, displacing 75 percent of the population, destroying roads and hospitals, and keeping tens of thousands of children out of school. Since the conflict ended in 2001, the people of Sierra Leone have been working together to rebuild what was lost.
One of the most important steps in the reconstruction process is helping children get back in school. Poverty, however, poses a significant challenge. Nearly 60 percent of Sierra Leone's population lives on less than $1 a day, compelling many children to help earn money for their families. What's more, the few children who are educated are often boys.
In spite of these challenges, organizations like Chibuzor Human Resource Development Organization (CHIDO) are helping communities in Sierra Leone make progress towards getting girls in school and keeping them there. With strong community participation, CHIDO is identifying vulnerable girls and equipping them with educational supplies such as uniforms and notebooks. In a region where many girls drop out of school before graduation, CHIDO is also offering incentives for the families to keep their girls in school, such as free medical services and food distributions. Lastly, CHIDO is ensuring that girls have the chance to go to school for years to come by fostering local groups who can support them.
Now, NetAid is helping CHIDO provide these opportunities to more girls in more communities. Your support will not only help girls get and education, it will rebuild the social fabric of a country torn apart by way.
