In Pakistan, the literacy rate for women in rural areas can be as low as 17%. The reason for this is simple: many girls do not go to school. Most schools available to girls are co-ed, so many parents choose not to enroll their daughters. Therefore many girls and women remain illiterate, stuck in a cycle of poverty.
Developments in Literacy (DIL) is dealing with this problem head-on, by building non-formal primary schools just for girls. DIL works with Khwendo Kor, a local organization, in recruiting young girls to attend these schools. DIL also works with the communities to help encourage the education of girls.

Developments in Literacy (DIL) Developments in Literacy (DIL) was launched in February 1997. DIL's main purpose is to spearhead a literacy drive in the remote areas of Pakistan by establishing non-formal schools aimed at imparting primary education to underprivileged children. DIL, a nonprofit, voluntary organization has succeeded, in a period of four years, at establishing 185 non-formal schools with an enrollment of approximately 8,000 children in Mianwali in Punjab, in Khairpur and Northwest portion of Orangi in Sindh and in Dir in NWFP. http://www.dil.org |
