 | In Haiti, one of the world's poorest countries, about 80% of the population lives on less than $1 per day. Although only half of the population is literate, education remains a luxury. Most families cannot afford to send their children to school, and many remote areas often do not even have schools. Making a bad problem worse, periodic political turmoil has closed educational facilities for months on end.
Beginning in 2002, NetAid World Schoolhouse partnered with Light for All (LiFA), a non-profit working in Haiti, to provide education for the some of the country's neediest children. The work focused on increasing access to education in remote communities in Bassin Bleu, Marbial, Medor and Lhomond.
In a short time, small changes grew into big successes. In Lhomond, where LiFA and World Schoolhouse helped build a school, enrollment nearly doubled. The facility grew from a one-room facility to a fully accredited primary school. Accreditation is a big deal in Haiti: the students of Lhomond are now able to take the country's national standardized test, opening doors to higher education if they pass.
Work in Haiti was not limited to education. NetAid also teamed up with LiFA to improve livelihoods and access to resources through building health clinics in communities. Investing in the health and education is the best way to bolster children’s development.
