In rural Burkina Faso, families live off the land and sell crops to make a living. School fees are due in September — the time of year when these struggling families get the lowest price for their grain.
Acting on a suggestion from a local teacher, DABA is supporting the Songdo ('to help each other') School Fund. At the beginning of the school year, the fund gives farming families money to help with school costs. In return, farmers promise a portion of their crops, which the fund holds and sells when the prices rebound. Profits are saved so that additional children can be supported the next year.
With support from Cisco, BidClix, and other donors, DABA has established the Songdo School Fund and is training local partners to administer the fund.
