U Myo Thant opened his small grocery store on a dock in the coastal Kawthaung region ten years ago. He sells sweets, biscuits, soft drinks, beer, soap and other small items to seafarers. Recently, U Myo Thant had a visit from Ko Myat Din, a Sales and Communications Representative from PSI Ko Myat Din who asked U Myo Thant if he would be interested in selling subsidized supplies of 'Aphaw' – or 'trusted companion' – brand condoms.
U Myo Thant was initially hesitant but Ko gave him information pamphlet and some samples to think about. When Ko returned a week later U Myo Thant had read the pamphlet and had some questions : "How good are 'Aphaw' condoms?" "How much does one condom usually sell for?" "What should I tell my clients if they ask why they should use a condom?" "Do people like the 'Aphaw' brand?"
Ko Myat Din explained to him how to store them safely and recommended a selling price of 5 Kyats per piece, or just over US 12 cents. Business has been booming. U Myo Thant now buys almost 200 condoms each month and displays them prominently in his store. He is happy to be carrying such a popular product in his store and proud to be contributing to the fight against HIV/AIDS in his community.
