Shazia's Story

May 12, 2002

A class of children in Pakistan.

Shazia, 22, loves to teach. She teaches adult literacy. She teaches embroidery, so that women in the community can make a living. Deeply religious, she speaks with other women in her community about the teachings of Islam. And, of course, Shazia teaches young girls in a community-based school.

Shazia's life has not been an easy one. Her father died recently, leaving her without a source of financial support. "I almost went knocking on doors," she says, "hunting for a respectable job." Her brother, though, saw a place where Shazia was needed. The Association for the Creation of Employment (ACE) was opening up a community-based school in the area and needed a female teacher. Shazia jumped at the chance. The number of students taught by Shazia has grown to 45. "This would not have been possible," she says, "without ACE and the local community cooperating to make it happen."
