MDG#2 Achieve universal primary education
Education is a powerful instrument for reducing poverty and inequality, improving health and social well-being, and laying the groundwork for sustained economic growth. It is essential for building democratic societies and dynamic, globally competitive economies. Providing universal primary education, however, remains a great challenge: There are currently 115 million children - 60 percent of them girls - not in primary school, the majority living in South Asia and sub-Saharan Africa. MDG 2 seeks to ensure that, by 2015, all primary age boys and girls around the world are enrolled in school. If achieved, it will give millions of children the tools and skills they need to rise out of poverty and become self-reliant, contributing members of society. Target:
- Ensure that, by 2015, children everywhere - boys and girls alike - will be able to complete a full course of primary schooling.
