Buddies Rock Out at Philadelphia Live 8 Concert

If you think it's hard to keep track of your friends at a local battle of the bands, try looking after a dozen buddies at a concert with over one million people. That was what it was like for the NetAid staffers who took some buddies along with them to the Live8 concert in Philadelphia.

Let's be honest: when the buddies first said they wanted to go, we were hesitant. But it was their last chance to enjoy themselves before playing hardball with the most powerful leaders in the world at the G8 summit. We figured it would be better to arrive at the table with George Bush, Tony Blair and other G8 leaders high on the energy of millions of people coming together for the world's poor.

After all, the mission of Live8 was right in line with the buddies' mission. The concerts-held on July 2 in London, Rome, Berlin, Tokyo, Moscow and other cities worldwide-were organized to send a unified message to G8 leaders that the helping the world's poor should be our highest priority.

In Philly, where the U.S. concert was held, steam was rising off the pavement. The buddies had to keep cool by dumping their heads in cups of water that were handed out to the crowd. Stoic as always, the buddies braved the heat through a full day of performances along with 1.5 million Americans of all ages and backgrounds.

One of the buddies was reprimanded for crowd-surfing (check out the photo) and trying to rush the stage. She tried to pass herself off as the fourth member of Destiny's Child but the bouncers weren't having it; maybe her outfit gave her away? Always the advocate, the buddy told the security staff about the plight of more than 100 million children worldwide who cannot go to school. The bouncers were so distracted that two people nearly rushed the stage for the Linkin Park, the following act.

The buddies finished the day exhausted but exhilarated-inspired by the millions of the people who had rallied behind their cause. With the echoes from the music still ringing in their ears, the buddies were on their way to the G8.

Learn how you can wear the white band.
