About NetAid

What is NetAid?

NetAid is a New York-based non-profit organization that educates, inspires and empowers young people to fight global poverty.  Focusing on the U.S. and other wealthy countries, our goal is to create a movement of young people who are champions for the world's poor and engaged global citizens.  NetAid's innovative programming directly supports the international community's goal of significantly decreasing extreme poverty and related ills by 2015. NetAid was founded by Cisco Systems and the United Nations Development Programme in 1999, and continues to work in partnership with the UN and the private sector.

What is extreme poverty?

"Extreme poverty" means living on less than U.S.$1 a day--a daily reality for more than one billion people around the world.  This kind of poverty robs people of fundamental human rights like access to food, shelter, clean water, education and basic healthcare.  It also directly contributes to global problems like political instability, HIV/AIDS and environmental damage.

Why focus on young people?

As the sources of abundant creativity, energy and enthusiasm, young people have often been the drivers of positive social change.  Most young people today have a better grasp than previous generations on the interdependence of our world; they were born into a global community shrunk by trends in communications, media, business and politics.  Most importantly, young people will be leaders, voters and activists for many years to come.  NetAid hopes that by educating and empowering them to fight poverty today, they will continue doing so well into the future.

What is the NetAid World Schoolhouse?
The NetAid World Schoolhouse initiative is designed to give more children in developing countries the opportunity to get a quality education. NetAid matches funding partners from around the world with quality local education projects that have been proven to have measurable, sustainable results.

Development experts agree that quality education is essential to improving the standard of living for people facing extreme poverty. The ability to read, write and do basic math are indispensable tools the poor need to create new opportunities for themselves. Education helps prevent the spread of HIV/AIDS and child labor, leads to a reduction in environmental degradation, and to an increase in economic growth . all of which make a real difference in the lives of the very poor. People around the world understand that education is the foundation on which individuals, families and communities can build sustainable futures.
